When asked about how the microbiota, or more specifically how prebiotic chicory root fiber, can improve your metabolism, Prof. Raylene Reimer (University of Calgary) explained several ways in which the metabolism can be influenced.
In the context of obesity, it has been shown that the intake of chicory root fiber promotes the growth of healthy bacteria, e.g. bifidobacteria in the gut. The production of short chain fatty acids increases, influencing the production of satiety hormones resulting in improved appetite regulation. Prebiotics can also help to reduce inflammation by creating a healthy gut microbe environment and a strong intestinal barrier, preventing leakiness in the gut.
